Golden retrievers from across the Mid-Atlantic will be converging on Dewey Beach for the fourth annual Golden Jubilee Sept. 30–Oct. 2.

The self-described Golden Jubilee instigator, Karen Gerth started the event in 2013 after spending a week in Dewey the year before with her husband and two goldens. She said she knew about the dog-themed weekends for greyhounds, chihuahuas and goldendoodles, so, she said, she asked town hall if there was one for golden retrievers.

Gerth said she was disappointed when Mayor Diane Hanson replied no. Gerth said her response was, “Do you want one?”

And so it began. As of 2015, she said, there are two Golden Jubilees in Dewey – a spring jubilee the second weekend in May and the fall jubilee the first weekend in October.

This year’s jubilee begins with a Gold Rush to Rehoboth Beach at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30. Gerth said to meet at the Bandstand for a stroll along the Boardwalk, shopping and an evening of making new friends.

The next morning, beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, there will be a blessing of the animals at the Dewey Beach Life Saving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave., followed by special announcements, recognition of special attendees and prizes.

At 11 a.m., there will be a large group photo, which will be followed by the real fun – playing on the beach.

“Running free, romping in the sun, sand and surf. Life is good,” said Gerth. “Dewey’s Golden Jubilee is the highlight for many pups and their people.”

Gerth said poop patrols have been added this year. Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday morning, all are invited to gather to form a search-and-rescue-type line and stroll the beach in search of any dirty little deposits that may have been missed during all the excitement, she said.

There will be a bonfire at 7 p.m. on Saturday, which will be hosted by GRREAT (Golden Retriever Rescue, Education and Training). Gerth said registration is free, but donations will be accepted. All funds raised during the event are donated to the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, a part of Morris Foundation Canine Lifetime Health Project.
