Herring Point Twilight 5K won by Jersey boy Patrick Mullen

July 25, 2016

Herring Point at the south end of Cape Henlopen State Park has become a happening place for locals with a Lewes address, from surfing north of the jetty to sitting and sunning on the beach, a cool respite for the occasional wader and wallower.

There’s a new big parking lot that backs up to the trail system, but it takes a cartographer to figure it out. The site is a haven for recreation, but the greenheads and black flies also like it a lot.

The first annual Twilight 5K July 22 began at 7 p.m. and attracted 107 runners in stickin’ hot weather; the waves of heat were higher that those in the surf.

Patrick Mullen, 15, from Morristown, N.J., placed first in 17:47, his red hair the color of the setting sun.

Mike Sewell, 47, was second followed by Martin Rodriguez in 18:52, Steven Eshelman in 18:52, Chris Stanley in 19:35, Sonny Boy Landis in 20:00, Eve Hoffman in 20:13, Paul Montini in 20:21, Brian Trupo in 21:11, Rebecca Hemler in 21:53, Rick Poppleton in 21:58, Breck Vanderwende in 22:06, Meryl Ludwig in 22:45, John Dowling in 22:50 and Abby Andrews in 22:57.

A lot of red-faced little people. Check out seashorestriders.com for complete results.

The 33rd Dam Mill 5K is Saturday, July 30, in Millsboro, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
