The Summer’s End 5K in Dewey Sept. 4 was run under partly sunny skies and a limited state of emergency because of fickle and indecisive Tropical Storm Hermine hanging off the coast like a loitering bar patron.

A large turnout of 288 runners, including the University of Delaware cross country clubs, showed up because the sun was out, and if it wasn’t they’d have shown up anyway.

“You never truly know about runners, but mostly they are up for any challenge or weather adventure,” said Race Director Wayne Kursh.

The young guns in the race pushed the top of the ticket to faster times, with 25 breaking 20 minutes. Sam Hete, 19, a former Sussex Tech runner, outsprinted Delaware teammate Brandon Holveck to the finish line 16:27 to 16:34.

The rest of the men’s leaderboard was William Rehrig in 16:44, Chris Kitson in 17:00 and Garrett Burnett in 17:05.

The top five women were Melissa Cummings in 18:51, Jeannie Bujdos in 19:12, Roxanne Ramirez in 19:55, Casey Birdsall in 20:22 and Haley Reid in 21:06.

The next Races2Run event is the 40th annual Gary P. Lister Bottle and Cork 10-Miler and 5K Run Saturday, Sept. 10.
