History of Saint George AME Church program set Feb. 17

February 15, 2017

The next Lewes Lunch and Learn program will be held at noon, Friday, Feb. 17, at Saint George AME Church at 317 Park Ave. in Lewes. This is an alternative location for the program, which is usually held at Hotel Rodney. The Rev. Deborah McCaffity will present The History of Saint George AME Church.

St. George AME Church pastor McCaffity will speak on the church's founding, its history in the First Town in the First State, and its continued presence and impact in the community. While placing the largely African-American congregation into the larger context of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Lewes St. George AME Church celebrated its 200th year of existence.

McCaffity has her bachelor of arts in sociology, and a master of divinity and doctorate of ministry. Before becoming the pastor of Saint George in Lewes in June 2014, she also pastored in lower Manhattan, and Harlem NYC. She has previously served as the executive director of housing and neighborhood preservation for the AME Church, providing social service programs, and assisting in construction of over 200 units of affordable housing and rehabilitation of over 500 houses.

The Lewes Historical Society hosts a Lewes Lunch & Learn series which includes various topics relating to the history of Lewes and surrounding area. This series is led by local history buffs, heritage area experts and museum professionals. Lectures take place on announced dates. These events are free and open to the public. Space is limited.
