Humphries scores in overtime to lift Cape over SAS 1-0

Vikings move to 3-1-1
September 22, 2016

Cape junior Troy Humphries scored with two minutes remaining in double overtime to lift the Vikings to a 1-0 victory over Sussex Academy Sept. 20 in Georgetown.

Cape outshot the Seahawks 29-6, but just couldn’t find the scoring mark in regulation play.

“We had to be very patient,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We had seven or eight opportunities, but couldn’t put it away.”

Kilby credited the Seahawks team with playing tough defense.

“[SAS] are very organized on defense. They sometimes played with everybody back on D. I think they were trying to counterattack, and the way you stop that is put one away early and force them to come out and play.”

Cape had 15 corner kicks, while the Seahawks had two. Goaltender Brent Hochrein made six saves, while Seahawks keeper Adam Krim had 28.

“Uly Slage did a wonderful job marking their best midfielder Nate Riddle,” Kilby said.

Cape’s winning goal came from Troy Humphries off a header from Zack Gelof after a corner kick at the 98-minute mark.

Cape travels to Woodside Thursday, Sept. 22, for a matchup with 4-0 Polytech. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
