Husbands homer leads Milton Majors to District 3 title

Milton defeats Laurel 1-0 in sixth inning
July 21, 2016

Milton’s Tyler Husbands drove a 1-1 Laurel pitch over the right-center fence in the sixth inning to pace the Milton Major 11/12 All-Stars to a 1-0 victory and the District 3 title.

Nick Cox pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings for Milton, striking out four Laurel batters. Timothy Hitchcock came into the game in the sixth with two on and one out and struck out the side to preserve the Milton victory.

Milton out hit Laurel 3-1. Austin Rhue and Brian Sponaugle safely hit for Milton.

Laurel’s Grant Allen returned to pitch a great game after being struck in the face by a ball and having to get x-rays the game before. He struck out four and gave up just one run.

Milton then traveled to Newark to take on a tough Middletown-Odessa-Townsend squad July 23 at the National Little League complex for the first round of the state tournament.

When the rain and lightning cleared, the Milton squad started off slow and never really recovered, as a two-run homer in the top of the first inning put them in a 2-0 hole. MOT added three more in the third to put Milton down 5-0. After MOT got two more in the fifth, the Milton squad tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth, picking up two runs.

Tyler Husbands walked with one out in the fifth and advanced to second on a passed ball. Chase Boyle reached base on an error and Husbands moved up to third on the play. Brian Sponaugle slammed a single to score Husbands and move Boyle to second. Boyle then moved to third on a passed ball and Sponaugle moved to second. Nick Cox walked to load the bases. Timmy Hitchcock grounded out, scoring Boyle. A ground out ended the inning.

MOT ended the contest 8-2 with one more run in the sixth. Milton did not score in the bottom of the sixth.

Milton plays the loser of Sunday’s Brandywine vs. MOT game Monday, July 25, at Newark.
