International soccer needs different overtime rules

July 8, 2016

Right now the European soccer championships are taking place in France. They are down to the last four countries: Portugal, Wales, Germany and France. In such an important championship, defense is an extremely vital part of the game. When the game is tied in the second half, sometimes it looks like the teams are trying to make sure the game goes into the penalty kick phase.

Right now, in overtime, there are two 15 minute periods. This is incredibly boring for the fans. There is an easy solution to this problem. In the first overtime, I think there should only be 10 players per team on the field (including the goalie) and then for the second overtime, I think it should go down to nine players. This change would undoubtedly make it a lot more exciting to watch the game and make it easier to score. Much like in professional hockey overtime rules. Anyone agree?

The Phillies are continuing their hot streak. They won 2 out of 3 games against the Kansas City Royals and swept the last place Atlanta Braves. I hope they can maintain this momentum until the All-Star break next weekend. A legitimate goal for the team would be  to finish the season over 500. It's rather obvious that they are hopelessly out of the race for their division with the Washington Nationals and the New York Mets being some ten games ahead of them.

The Wimbleton results are proof that nothing is inevitable in sports. Novak Djokovic lost in the third round to Sam Querrey from the United States in only four sets. Novak's performance was very poor but Sam played very well. Sam has had very little success against the top players. Maybe  this win will give him a boost of confidence to help him to move up in the rankings. Ever since Andy Roddick retired, American men's tennis has been very disappointing in the major tournaments.
