Irwin R. Murray, retired building inspector

Irwin R. Murray, 100, of Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, formerly of Georgetown, died Wednesday, March 22, 2017. He was a graduate of Georgetown High School class of 1935, and a graduate of Goldey College class of 1937.

Mr. Murray was self-employed as a contractor and builder in Sussex County. He later became a building inspector for the State of Delaware. He also served as director of maintenance & operations of the Fountains of Palm Beach Fla.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and Grace United Methodist Church, Georgetown, and was on the official board of Wesley Church during the 1950s. He also was a member of the Board of Education Georgetown Special District, vice president of Georgetown Building & Loan Association, and director of the Georgetown Trust Co., past president of Georgetown-Millsboro Rotary Club, and member of Sussex Post No. 8 American Legion.

Mr. Murray also served on the board of the Delaware Harness Racing Association, and worked at the Brandywine and Harrington raceways as a dismissal and patrol judge. He also was a Mason and member of Franklin Lodge No. 12 in 1939. He held a number of positions and was knighted in St. John's Commandery No. 1 in 1944. Mr. Murray retired as a Grand High Priest in 1954.

Mr. Murray was predeceased by his high school sweetheart and wife of 73 years, Ruth Elizabeth Dawson Murray. He is survived by three children, Susan Murray Elliott (Carl) of Ohio, Andrew J. Murray II (Rose Marie) of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Jessie Murray Hudson (John) of Wilmington. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Ruth Mahoney, Jane Hough, Andrew J. Murray III, Timothy Murray, Robyn Perkins, Susan Krikelis and Rob Hudson; 17 great-grandchildren; cousins Betty Virginia Groton and Harold McCabe; and a sister, Marion Irvine.

Graveside services and interment will be held at a later date.
