It’s time to look at new blood in Rehoboth

June 23, 2017

There are 1,624 registered voters in Rehoboth Beach. My wife and I are two of the 1,624.

Recently we walked down Rehoboth Avenue and passed our new $22,000,000 City Hall. The building is impressive, but what impressed me the most was that the cost of the $22,000,000 building worked out to over $13,500 for each of the 1,624 registered Rehoboth voters.

That meant that my wife's and my share of the cost of this impressive building was over $27,000.

It makes me wonder what Mayor Cooper and the six other commissioners were thinking. Did they have my wife's and my interests in mind when these decisions were made? How about yours and the other 1,622 registered voters and taxpayers? Did they even think about the possibility that spending $13,500 per voter was fiscally irresponsible? How will the voters and taxpayers of Rehoboth pay for this building designed to be physically impressive but with total disregard for the fact that a functional City Hall could have been built for a fraction of the cost?

I have $13,500 reasons to believe it is time for a change and to vote accordingly. Rehoboth needs a mayor and commissioners who are devoted to the town, and to the voters and taxpayers. Officials who think about the effect of their decisions on you and I, and who realize that their role is to serve, not to build monuments to themselves at our expense.

As voters and taxpayers we should be looking for candidates who have a fresh perspective and are not tied to the past. The new faces on the ballot deserve a $13,500 look. Lisa Schlosser, one of the new candidates for commissioner, is holding an open house July 2 from 5 to 7 p.m., at her home, 14 Dover St.

My wife and I will be there to find out more about Lisa and hope to see the other 1,622 of you there as well preparing for your $13,500 vote Aug. 12.
