James H. Owens, retired state policeman

James H. Owens, 72, of Milford passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2016.
James was born in Milford, the son of the late Mildred (Smith) Owens and Morris B. Owens Jr. He graduated Milton High School in 1962.
Jimmy worked at DuPont in Seaford after serving in the National Guard, and then joined the Delaware State Police from which he retired in 1977.
After retirement his hobbies (farming, trucking and horses) led to other opportunities as he was a CDL instructor for DPL and fleet safety officer for King Cole and Townsends.
He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association and past president of the Delmarva Independent Truckers Association.
In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his sisters, Grace Kay Owens, Joann Brittingham, Robin Kight and Ida Owens Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joanne (Kral) Owens, sons, James C. Owens and his wife Donna P. of Milton and Charles H. Owens and fiance, Belinda Ball of Knoxville, Tenn.; brother George Owens of Ellendale; sisters Sally Hurd of Milford and Rhonda Whitehouse of Ellendale; and a grandson, Luke R. Owens.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Burial will be private.
