The Cape Henlopen School District Board of Education approved the appointment of JD Maull as the head football coach, replacing Bill Collick, who will retire at the end of the school year.

Maull has led the Hawks of St. Georges to 12 playoff games over the last five years. He was the State Coach of the Year in 2013.

“It’s like playing an extra season,” he said. “St. Georges has been an amazing experience. I’ve been surrounded by great people and outstanding young men, but it’s time to come home.”

Maulls who have quarterbacked at Cape over the life of the school district include Gilbert, Jay, Obie, Lonnie, JD and Kai. JD will be the first from his clan of uncles and cousins to officially quarterback the team from the sidelines.

“Everybody talks about skill people, but it’s those guys up front that make you a good football team,” Maull said. “We will play a physical style and run the football.”

Trip Delcampo, a former Cape player and left tackle on the University of Delaware’s National Championship football team of 2003, summed up his reaction to the appointment of JD as Cape’s new football coach with a Facebook comment: “Niche 24 blast!”

Collick, who will not only step down as football coach but also as the school’s discipline dean, began his career as a Cape assistant football coach and teacher of physical education in 1975. He moved on through the years with head coaching stints at Delaware State University, Sussex Tech and Cape.
