John (Jack) McKinnon Emery, devoted husband and father

John (Jack) McKinnon Emery of Lewes, formerly of Annandale, Va., died peacefully surrounded by his family Saturday, May 13, 2017.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Denise; daughters Katherine Emery of Arlington, Va., and Janet Flynn (Peter) of Chatham, N.J.; adored grandchildren Erin, Brendan and James Flynn; brother Richard P. Emery of Las Cruces, N.M. (Susan); and sister Ellen Coyne (Bill) of Newcastle, Maine.

Born Nov. 11, 1941, in Ridley Park, Pa., Jack grew up in Elmira, N.Y. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy in Elmira, Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, and received a master’s in business administration from Marymount University in Arlington. Jack was an Eagle Scout and served in the U.S. Army. Following a career spanning 36 years lobbying for both the Blue Cross & Blue Shield Associations and American Medical Association, Jack retired in 2005.

Jack was an avid fisherman, excellent bridge player, sports lover, outdoorsman, and he loved to sing with the Mixed Blessings, an a capella group in Lewes. In his retirement, he served as president of the Indian River Bass Club, board member of the Southern Delaware Choral Society, and served on the St. Peter's Episcopal Church Vestry, also in Lewes.

A Celebration of Jack's Life will be held Monday, June 5, at 11 a.m., at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 2nd St., Lewes, where friends may call beginning at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park, P.O.Box 132, Nassau, DE 19969, or Osher Lifelong Learning of the University of Delaware, 520 Dupont Avenue, Lewes, DE 19958 in his memory.

Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
