John James Deiter, worked hard, played hard

John James Deiter, 75, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Md., Friday, Oct. 27, 2017.

Mr. Deiter was born in Newton, N.J., to the late Sidney and Dorothy (Rassbach) Deiter. He was a contractor and owned Deiter Inc. He was a member of the Hackettstown, N.J. Moose Lodge 816. John loved hunting, camping, fishing, travelling, and enjoyed playing poker at the Poker Club. He was a family man, and was known for picnics, reunions, or whatever excuse for getting the family together. He was known by his motto, “work hard, play hard.”

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Joan Basenese and Dorothy Ann Duff.

He is survived by his wife, Gretchen Deiter; children, John J. (Sherry) Deiter Jr., Marie (Jeff) Gordy, Joseph S. (Kimberly) Deiter, Jessica J. (Daron) Lewis, and Megan A. Deiter; sister, Mary D. Noel; brother, Sidney B. Deiter Jr.; grandchildren, Joseph, Anthony, Ashley, Courtney, Johnny III, Brendan, Haley, Cameron, Juliana, and Baby Lewis; two great-grandsons, Braden and Devin; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other children who recognized him as 'PePa.’

A funeral service will be held Sunday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m., in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Laurel.
