John M. McMeekin, retired educator

John M. McMeekin, 79, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in the Bronx, N.Y., son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Zimmer) McMeekin.

Mr. McMeekin retired after 30 years as a Delaware educator, teacher and assistant principal. He was a member of the National Education Association and a former member of the Counsel for Exceptional Children. Mr. McMeekin was also a very active member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach, the Masons, American Legion Post 28, and Cancer in Common. He was a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served during the Korean War, and was a member of the Marine Corps League. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Audrey M. (Schwerthoffer) McMeekin; two sons: Roger (Beth) McMeekin and Scott (Lisa) McMeekin; four grandchildren: Scott, Amanda, John and Thomas McMeekin; two brothers: Michael and Thomas McMeekin; and a sister: Pat Sullivan.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 1, at 10 a.m., at Epworth UMC, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call between 9 and 10 a.m. Final Services with military honors will be held at 2 p.m., at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

In honor of Mr. McMeekin, the family also asks that you think of a favorite joke John shared with you.
