Joseph Edward Burgess, loved teaching Zumba

Joseph Edward Burgess, 70, passed away at home in Lewes, Monday, March 27, 2017, from brain cancer, peacefully in his sleep.

Joseph was born in Charleston, W.Va., May 28, 1946. He graduated from Morris Harvey College and received a bachelor's degree in journalism.

Joseph was married to Lyle D. Haas Aug. 19, 2013, thanks to the help of our wonderful President Obama, after being together for 40 years. They met in Atlantic City, N.J., and then moved to Washington, D.C. They spent most of their lives together in Fredericksburg, Va., and finally retired to Rehoboth Beach, which was always their dream.

Joseph had a glorious career with The United States District Court in Washington, D.C. with 41 years of service, He was loved by all who worked with him because he always had the time to help.

After he retired, his second career was teaching Zumba in the beach area. Of all the things in his life, he would rather dance than eat.

Even at the age of 70, he was able to teach three one-hour classes back to back.

Joseph is survived by his brother, Terry Edward Burgess, and his niece Julie, both of Charleston, W.Va., and the rest of his family and friends.

Joseph is proceeded in death by his parents, Percy and MaeBess Burgess.

The memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, May 6, at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 18 Olive Ave., Rehoboth Beach. Following the service there will be a Celebration of Life Party at the clubhouse in Bay Crossing Homes off Route 1 in Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to All Saints' Episcopal Church, 18 Olive Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
