Katharine C. Bennett, faith and family foremost

September 11, 2018

Katharine (Kay) Bennett, 80, of Georgetown passed away peacefully Saturday,  Aug. 25, 2018, surrounded by members of her family at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.

Kay is survived by her loving husband of more than 58 years, Richard; and her four children, Kathy Hanna of Newark, Dan (Nancy) of Middletown, Chris (Karen) of Lincoln and Rick of Bridgeville.  She is also survived by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Kay was born May 3, 1938, to Raymond and Helen Carson in Norristown, Pa. She graduated William Penn High School, New Castle in 1956. She then attended the University of Delaware, graduating in 1960 with a degree in medical technology.  Kay was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Georgetown, and was extremely active in the Episcopal Church throughout her life, including helping to design the initial Christian education program at Camp Arrowhead, and the Cursillo movement at the diocesan and national levels.

Kay loved to be outdoors, especially hiking and picnicking with her family.  Her green thumb was well-known and her ability to resurrect plants thought dead was sometimes just short of miraculous.  She also enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting. But one of her greatest passions was puzzles of any kind. She especially enjoyed doing puzzles from crosswords to jigsaw with her grandchildren.

The two things that drove Kay were her faith and her family. Nothing could stop her from being with her children and grandchildren; whether it be a celebration or a crisis, she would be in the middle of it; loving and supportive. She helped raise all her grandchildren. Her servant heart was not just limited to her family; any time a need came to her attention, she did all she could to help, whether it be giving someone a safe haven or helping them through a difficult time.

A celebration of Kay’s life will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, beginning with a time with family at 1 p.m., followed by a service at 1:30 p.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 122 E. Pine St., Georgetown.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Kay to Delaware Hospice at delawarehospice.org or Camp Arrowhead at camparrowhead.net.
