López Commentary: Balanced and thoughtful

April 2, 2018

I wanted to share my deep thanks to state Sen. Ernie López for his recent balanced and thoughtful commentary regarding the bipartisan steps he has taken along with his colleagues to address school safety in Delaware, and particularly his support of the Beau Biden Gun Violence Prevention Act.

After reading his commentary Friday morning, I immediately reached out to Ernie to tell him how important his efforts to forge compromise, particularly on such a divisive issue, were for all of us. As a registered Independent, I have great appreciation for public servants who are willing to cast aside party labels in order to thoughtfully work through the issues of the day.

Ernie has done this repeatedly, and I have always been impressed with his ability to share his positions in a clear, concise and cogent manner. When there is disagreement, it is based on reasonable evidence, and his Senate record is one that demonstrates the value he places in working across the aisle toward substantive improvements as opposed to feel-good measures.

As an aside, I was comforted to see the listing of comprehensive legislation that had already been enacted concerning school safety and efforts to address gun violence in our state. I was thankful to see that our Delaware legislators have made it a priority to do the heavy lifting of what can be difficult and polarizing work. Senator López wrote with clarity and conviction of the importance he places in supporting legislation and building out from a common center as opposed to crusading for bills from far-flung political extremes.

This type of leadership is sorely lacking in Washington, D.C., but thankfully part of the legislative process in Dover due to the efforts of Senator López and many of his colleagues from both sides of the aisle.

With that said, many thanks once again to my friend Ernie for his hard work which is appreciated by so many Republicans, Democrats and Independents like me here in the 6th District.
