A $975,000 upgrade of Lake Avenue in Rehoboth Beach began Sept. 26.

The project comprises of new bike lanes, crosswalks and lighting in the area. During construction, on-street parking will be prohibited and traffic on Lake Avenue will be one-way.

Wilmington-based contractor Sam’s Construction will work in two phases starting on the north side of Lake Avenue at Third Street and moving west to Stingray Sushi Bar and Asian Latino Grill. A second phase, to begin in February, will improve the south side of Lake Avenue from City Hall Drive to Third Street.

While Lake Avenue will be one-way, Maryland Avenue will be restriped between Second and Third streets to allow for two-way traffic.

The city has been planning the project for five years, with 80 percent federal funding and 20 percent by the city with oversight by Delaware Department of Transportation.
