League Day 2017 calls for justice to reduce poverty April 4

March 27, 2017

This year, the League of Women Voters of Delaware and the American Association of University Women will focus on four key issues - justice, education, health and affordable housing -- at League Day in Dover, Tuesday, April 4, at the Duncan Center, 500 West Loockerman St., Dover.

Retired state senator Karen Peterson is League Day's luncheon speaker, who will discuss the impact of the gender pay gap, and how it is leading women into poverty. This year's League Day falls on Equal Pay Day - originated by the National Committee on Pay Equity in 1996 as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men's and women's wages.

Charlotte King, founder of the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice and a past president of LWVDE, will frame the discussion, which will include a presentation on the impact of education on poverty in Delaware, given by Prof. Dan Rich, policy director, Wilmington Education Improvement Commission and professor of public policy at the University of Delaware. Next, Delaware's Director of Medicaid, Steven Groff, will review the state's current health programs.

Affordable Housing and Homelessness in Delaware will be addressed by Jeanine Kleimo, Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing and board member of NCALL, the nonprofit affordable housing corporation based in Dover.

League Day is sponsored by the League of Women Voters Delaware and the American Association of University Women. Cosponsors include the American Civil Liberties Union, Delaware Coalition Against Gun Violence, DelawareERANow, and the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $30 and includes morning refreshments and a buffet luncheon with legislators.

After the luncheon, attendees will move on to Legislative Hall to meet with their legislators and with a volunteer registered lobbyist, to present position papers and attend committee hearings. Attendees may also choose to attend a press conference on pay equity in Legislative Hall.

Register by Friday, March 30, at http://lwvdelaware.org/News.html#s01 or call 302-571-8948.
