Three people were injured during a multi-vehicle crash on Stein Highway June 13 that sent a tractor-trailer crashing into the front of a Seaford-area home.

The crash occurred shortly after 6 a.m., west of Shufelt Road, where 19-year-old Joshua Hurley of Cambridge, Md., was driving a 2017 Ford Mustang westbound on Stein Highway, said Sgt. Richard Bratz of Delaware State Police.

At the same time, 54-year-old Anthony Hughes of Cambridge, Md., was driving a 2007 Peterbilt tractor pulling a 2014 Wilson trailer east on Stein Highway, approaching the Mustang. Behind Hughes, 70-year-old William Robinson of Federalsburg, Md., was driving eastbound on Stein Highway in a 2000 Peterbilt tractor pulling a 2015 Timpte trailer.

For unknown reasons, Hurley left his side of the road and pulled into the eastbound lane of Stein Highway. Hughes tried to avoid a collision, but the left front of the mustang hit the left side of his tractor-trailer. Hughes continued east for a short distance before pulling over on the shoulder.

After the impact, the Mustang spun counter-clockwise in the eastbound lane, directly in the path of the second tractor-trailer driven by Robinson, causing a second collision, Bratz said. The Mustang was pushed off the north side of the roadway and into a utility pole, where it came to a stop and caught on fire.

Robinson’s tractor-trailer left the north edge of the road and hit the front of a house on Stein Highway following the crash.

A GMC Sierra, driven by 37-year-old Oscar Garcia of Seaford, traveling behind the Mustang was not involved in the initial crash, but swerved off the road and sustained minor damage, Bratz said.

Both trailers were empty and on their way to Laurel Grain, Bratz said.

Hurley was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. He was cited for failing to remain in a single lane.

Hughes was uninjured.

Robinson was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with serious, but nonlife-threatening, injuries.

Garcia also was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

All four people involved in the crashes were wearing seatbelts, Bratz said.

Stein Highway from Shufelt Road to Green Briar Road was closed for about 4.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Delaware State Police are continuing an investigation and were assisted by Seaford Volunteer Fire Department, Blades Volunteer Fire Company, Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company, Federalsburg Volunteer Fire Company, Ridgely Volunteer Fire Company, Leipsic Volunteer Fire Company, Hartley Volunteer Fire Company, Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, Millsboro Volunteer Fire Company, Sussex County EMS, Sussex County Technical Rescue, Kent County Technical Rescue, Delaware Department of Transportation and Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
