Lectures, hikes and crafts at Delaware Seashore State Park start Jan. 2
The beginning of the new year is a great time to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul at Delaware Seashore State Park. To help people get outdoors, stay active, be creative and learn about the rich local history and natural wonders of the area, a park naturalist will lead a hike every Sunday afternoon in January in a different location within the seashore region. All hikes begin at 2 p.m. and are $5 per person; preregistration is required. The hiking schedule is as follows: Jan. 7, Assawoman Canal Trail; Jan. 14, Thompson Island Nature Preserve; Jan. 21, Prickly Pear Trail at Fresh Pond; and Jan. 28, Burton Island Nature Preserve.
Winter lectures will feature a different topic at 5 p.m. each Tuesday at the Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum The lecture series is free, and all participants will receive a coupon to a craft series program later that week. Preregistration is not required. The lecture series is as follows: Jan. 2, Jeff Tinsman, DNREC: Delaware's Artificial Reefs; Jan. 9, Tim Dring, U.S. Life-Saving Service Heritage Association: Catching the Rum-Runners: Delaware Coast Guard Operations during Prohibition Years; Jan. 16, Rick Uva: Cultivating the Wild Beach Plum; Jan. 23, Denise Clemons: Culinary Heritage of Southern Delaware; Jan. 30, Larry Mayo: The American View of the U.S. Constitution; Feb. 6, John McCarthy, Delaware State Parks Archaeology: Delaware's Quarantine Stations, a Time Traveler's Presentation; Feb. 13, Center for the Inland Bays: State of the Bays; Feb. 20, Jeff Moore, Delaware State Parks: Primitive Skills in Archaic Delaware; and Feb. 27, Red Moulinier, Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation: Lighthouses of the Delaware Bay.
A new addition to the winter programs is the Thursday evening craft series. Park staff will lead a different upcycling or nautical-themed craft at 7 p.m. each Thursday. Preregistration is required, and participants must be at least 12 years old.
