Let’s all move forward together

January 24, 2017

During the election campaign, there were many Hillary Clinton supporters with signs which read, "Love Trumps Hate."

With the election over, we have all seen the hate displayed by these folks; toward Trump supporters, the election process, and to our new president. When do we start to see the love - toward our free and fair election process, toward our democratic institutions, and toward our president?

The Democrat congressional representatives who boycotted the inauguration demonstrated their true character and immaturity. These representatives should remember that, if you don't engage and become part of the solution, you run the risk of being perceived as contributing to the problem, with possible repercussions down the road.

When Reagan took command, one of the sayings going around was, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way," and the same might be applicable now. Folks in the hate business, of the right or left, should get it into their heads that disagreement does not equate to hate.

I can disagree with you on a whole host of issues, but that does not mean that I hate you!

I am especially dismayed by what I see as "pre-emptive hate," the name-calling regularly practiced by liberal Democrats. If you do not support abortion, you are a misogynist. If you question the effectiveness of Black Lives Matter, you are a racist. If you do not embrace alternate sexual lifestyles, you are a fascist.

Assigning people who disagree with you to a "Basket of Deplorables" and practicing pre-emptive hate does nothing to advance your position, and only further erodes public discourse and our society.
