Let’s not turn Kings Highway into Route 1

August 26, 2016

I.G.Burton's letter of Aug. 19 in the Gazette shows how out of touch he is with the residents of Lewes. This is especially the case for homeowners living near Kings Highway and Gills Neck Road intersection. We have a home in Breakwater Estates. We think that there is more than adequate access to shopping in the Lewes and Rehoboth Beach area. In fact, we think shopping is overbuilt.

The problem we see is the change in zoning along Kings Highway to B-1 to create a new shopping center will bring increased traffic congestion and lower the water quality for the City of Lewes. Traffic on Kings Highway and Route 9 is already gridlocked in the summer. The last thing we need is more shopping centers and more traffic, period.

We suggest that Mr. Burton talk to and listen to the residents of Lewes and not just assume we want more access to shopping.

Let's not "Route-1-ify" Kings Highway.
