Lewes Cycle Sports rolls on
Regular customers of Lewes Cycle Sports will likely see familiar faces when they walk into the shop on Savannah Road in Lewes.
Despite new ownership, the shop still has longtime employees Glen Shaffer, Howie Hundley and Kevin Samaroo offering helping hands for bike repairs, sales and rentals.
“Our customers are sticking with us because of those guys,” said Brian Kellman, who with his wife Megan recently took over ownership of the store from original owner Merrill Lynch. “That just says a lot about them and what we do here.”
Lewes Cycle Sports opened in 1990; it was the first tenant of the shops at the Beacon Motel. Over the last 27 years, the shop has built a strong reputation in the community, whether it’s locals looking to have their bikes repaired or the annual summertime visitor renting one of 125 rental bikes for the week.
The Kellmans recently moved to the Cape Region from the Washington, D.C., area, where Brian worked in sales for a trade association and Megan worked as a teacher at an elementary school. Megan is a native of the area and a 2001 graduate of Cape Henlopen High School.
Megan’s mother, Maryann McFee, owns Mare’s Bears Quilt Shop next door.
“We’ve been talking about moving here for years,” Brian said. “I said if we moved here, I'd want to own my own business.”
The couple happened to be driving past Lewes Cycle Shop during the conversation, and Brian pointed to the shop as an example of the type of business he’d like to own.
Two weeks later, Megan’s mother, not knowing about the couple’s earlier conversation, called to let them know the cycle shop owner may be willing to sell. The rest is history.
In addition to repairs and rentals, the shop also has a large selection of bicycles for sale, including a variety of styles, makes, models and bikes for children and adults. Special ordering is available for bicycles not available at the shop.
Delivery service is available in the summer.
Lewes Cycle Sports also has a kiosk at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal. Brian would like to improve the transaction process for rentals at the ferry because a lot of people come over and want to rent a bike, he said.
The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday; and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday. Hours are likely to change as the weather turns colder. For more information, go to www.lewescyclesports.com or call 302-645-4544 or 1-888-800-2453.
