Lewes Dairy Christmas in July 5K to benefit Salvation Army Toy Shop July 3

June 23, 2017

To celebrate Christmas in the warmer weather and help to begin the season of giving and togetherness early this year, Lewes Dairy is hosting the inaugural Christmas in July 5K to help collect gifts for The Salvation Army Toy Shop, with registration beginning at 7 a.m., at American Legion Post 17.

The event will include a Kiddie K race, competitive 5K run, family race and walkers competition. Along with the healthy family and friends walk/run, Santa and his elves will be in attendance to hear early wishes from young and old. Free activities will include whipped cream pie-throwing contests, Martin's egg spoon races, and flower planting. Other activities for young ones include face painting, balloons, sign-making for the race, coloring books and rubber balls. There will be time for photos with Santa.

Participants will have great post-race food including world-famous Capriotti's Bobbie sandwiches with turkey and all the fixings, peppermint taffies from Candy Kitchen, Dannon yogurt, fresh fruit, famous Lewes Dairy egg nog, Surf Bagels with holiday toppings, Christmas cookies from Frank and Louie's, and even egg nog flavored ice cream. Those over 21 may partake in some refreshing brew.

Sherry Hastings, marketing director for the nearly 100-year-old Lewes Dairy, says, "Christmas in July is meant to be a family event. The Lewes Dairy family believes in giving to the less fortunate. The Delaware Salvation Army Toy Shop provides toys for needy families in all three counties. Last year they helped 35,000 families in the state." Hastings invites everyone to come out and enjoy the fun and perform a good deed by bringing a toy to donate. Attendees are urged to wear something seasonal.

Advance registration entrants receive a T-shirt. Historic glass bottles from Lewes Dairy filled with egg nog go to overall male and female winners, and masters male and female winners. Awards go to top three male and female finishers in 10-year age categories 9 and under to 80 and over as well as to the top three male and female walkers. The winning family teams will receive Lewes Christmas tree ornaments. All Kiddie K entrants receive a prize.

Preregistration for run/walk events is $25 until Thursday, June 29; after that, the cost is $30. Students pay $20 and $25. For more information and to register, go to www.races2run.com/beach-races-2. There is no charge for the Kiddie K.
