Lewes Historical Society Fall Craft Fair set Sept. 30

Mike and Susan Veasey are featured artists
September 20, 2017

The Lewes Historical Society 2017 Fall Craft Fair is set Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., at the Historic Campus at Second and Shipcarpenter streets in downtown Lewes. Admission to the festival is $5 per person, to be paid at the gate; children under 12 are free. Proceeds from this event will benefit educational and preservation programs at The Lewes Historical Society.

The Fall Craft Fair's featured artists are Mike and Susan Veasey. Their folk art carvings are made from 100 percent recycled wood. Untreated dock pilings, power line poles and old structural support beams are used. Each piece is hand carved and painted, and every piece of wood has its own characteristics, giving all the carvings a unique personality with old peg holes and character lines in different places. The character lines in the carvings won't open any further. They are created by trapped moisture the artists remove by torching the carving until it glows red and brushing away the loose char. This raises the grain of the wood while getting rid of excess moisture.

The Historic Complex consists of numerous historic buildings that will be open to the public. These houses and museums, surrounded by shade trees and gardens, provide a beautiful backdrop for the craft fair. Visitors can enjoy festive live music and delicious food. Over 4,000 visitors are expected to attend the Lewes Fall Craft Fair this year. The Lewes Fall Craft Fair is well-known for the exceptional quality of the craftspeople, including new and returning artists from across Delmarva and the Eastern Shore.
