Early reservations are encouraged
February 25, 2018

The Lewes Historical Society has set a day trip to Cambridge, Md., Friday, March 16. Traveling via charter bus, the group will depart Lewes at 8:30 a.m. from the Lowe's Home Improvement parking lot next to Route 1 at 20364 Plantation Road, Lewes. Tickets are $50 per person for members and $65 per person for nonmembers (a new individual membership is included in the purchase). Purchasers may buy a ticket for themselves at the nonmember price and get a member's price ticket for a spouse or significant other.

For more information or to purchase tickets, call 302-645-7670. The day trip ticket includes transportation and lunch. Seating is limited to 55 people, and early reservations are encouraged.

The day will begin at Linchester Mill, one of the last operating water-powered mills on the Eastern Shore, where the long development of American milling works still echoes. Continuing toward the Chesapeake Bay, there will be a stopover at Buckstown Village Country Store, a 19th century site where Harriet Tubman was nearly killed trying to protect a young slave boy who was fleeing an angry overseer.

By lunchtime, attendees will arrive at the recently opened Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitors Center where participants will have their choice of a boxed lunch option to enjoy while exploring the legacy of this rich site.

Participants are free to explore historic Cambridge on their own, but must return to the agreed-upon departure area by 3:30 p.m. The day will end by the river in Cambridge, with enough free time for snacking, shopping, or a visit to the Ruark Boat Works and Richardson Maritime Museum, which costs an additional $5 self-pay entrance fee.

Organizers hope the allure of the shore will allow participants to be swept away by its significant history.
