Lewes library to host rare and collectible book sale and members preview June 24

June 15, 2017

For the first time in its history, the Friends of the Lewes Public Library will hold a rare and collectible book sale from 3 to 6 p.m., Saturday, June 24, at the library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. More than 500 old, unusual or rare books will be available at prices starting at $2. Some books date back to the mid-1800s. Credit cards will be accepted for purchases of $10 or more. A preview sale for Friends members will be from 2 to 3 p.m., before the event opens to the public. Memberships can be purchased at the door.

Because the library has accumulated so many antiquarian books, they are being priced aggressively, at 30 percent to 65 percent below prices at Amazon or Bookfinder.com. Books being offered include children's, science, home and garden, local interest, biography, history, religion and fiction. Unusual items offered include a collection of opera librettos, rare magazines and old play programs. Items will be sorted by category and protected by acid-free clear bags. Approximately 95 percent of the books are hardback.

"Our volunteers are still making amazing discoveries as they go through the donations," says Candace Vessella, Friends of the Lewes Public Library board president. "Collectors will find some real treasures, and at prices well below market value." She says people in the Lewes area really appreciate books and tend to hold onto their favorites, but as residents downsize or books get left to estates, people look for a place to donate them where they'll make a difference, and they naturally think of the library, where a book they no longer want can help raise money to support library services. "We're delighted to pass these wonderful books on to people who will appreciate them and, in the process, raise much-needed funds for our library."

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Friends of the Lewes Public Library, a separate 501c3 affiliate of contributing members who support the Lewes Public Library. Proceeds will be used for book and media purchases, library programming, special projects and other library needs.
