Lewes police seem more lax on bikes

September 23, 2016

Bicycle safety is apparently not as important in Lewes as it is in Rehoboth Beach.

As I followed two bicycle-riding police officers heading southeast on 4th street about 5 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 6, I was concerned that I may have rolled slowly through the intersection of DuPont Avenue and 4th Street. I saw the two police officers on bicycles traveling east on West 4th Street as they crossed in front of me while I made the right onto 4th.

I was relieved, however, when the police ran every stop sign between DuPont and Savannah Road, figuring they would not ticket me for a lesser offense than they were committing at each crossroad.

My advice to Rehoboth Beach bicyclists is start riding in Lewes where minor indiscretions on a bike are overlooked, at least for the police.
