LFD Auxiliary seeks sponsors for Stop, Drop and Run 5K June 10

Proceeds to go toward lifesaving Lucas device
February 18, 2018

The Lewes Fire Dept. Auxiliary presented $5,000 to the department at the annual banquet Jan. 13 at Nassau Valley Vineyards. The donation is to be used as seed money to purchase a Lucas Device. Auxiliary members hope to raise the remainder of the $15,000 price tag at their fourth annual Stop, Drop and Run 5K Sunday, June 10.

The theme of this year's 5K is Stayin' Alive. Although the Bee Gees didn't have CPR in mind when they performed that 1970s hit, it has the right beat for providing CPR chest compressions at the right pace to revive a patient.

A Lucas Device is a chest compression system that can be used for performing external cardiac compressions on adult patients who have acute circulatory arrest, defined as absence of spontaneous breathing and pulse, and loss of consciousness. The mechanically controlled Lucas compressions are able to sustain a higher blood flow to the brain and heart compared to manual compressions. The device also frees up rescuers to focus on other lifesaving tasks and creates new rescue opportunities. Because this machine won't get tired, it will keep the beat and also keep EMT personnel safer in the rear of an ambulance.

The LFD Auxiliary is looking for sponsors to help them with their goal. For more information about sponsorship, email LFDAUX@gmail.com or call 302-329-9396.  For more race information, go to www.races2run.com or www.lewesfire.com.

For more than 200 years, the men and women of this department have run in when others run out. Now it is the community’s turn to help support Lewes’ bravest, the volunteer firefighters who give their best to people who are having their worst day.
