Live broadcast of Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’ to be screened March 3, 5, 6

February 28, 2018

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present the Metropolitan Opera's live broadcast of Giacomo Puccini's lyrical and beautiful “La Boheme” at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 3; 12:30 p.m., Monday, March 5; and 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, at the Cinema Art Theater. Each screening will be shown as a recorded presentation one week after being filmed live.

The exciting cast of Franco Zeffirelli’s classic production of “La Boheme” includes Sonya Yoncheva as Mimì, Michael Fabiano as Rodolfo, Susanna Phillips as Musetta and Lucas Meachem as Marcello. Marco Armiliato conducts.

This passionate, timeless and indelible story of love among young artists in Paris can stake its claim as the world’s most popular opera. It has a marvelous ability to make a powerful first impression and to reveal unsuspected treasures after dozens of hearings. At first glance, “La Boheme” is the definitive depiction of the joys and sorrows of love and loss; on closer inspection, it reveals the deep emotional significance hidden in the trivial things – a bonnet, an old overcoat, a chance meeting with a neighbor - that make up everyday lives.

The action, set in Paris circa 1830, reflects the issues and concerns of a particular time when, following the upheavals of revolution and war, French artists have lost their traditional support base of the aristocracy and the church. The story centers on a self-conscious youth at odds with mainstream society – a Bohemian ambience that is clearly recognizable in any modern urban center. “La Boheme” captures this ethos in its earliest days.
