Live music to enhance Georgetown Farmers Market June 29

June 26, 2016

Shoppers can get everything they need from local farmers and vendors every Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at 16 Mile Brewery on S. Bedford Street as the Greater Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and one of Delaware's leading craft breweries present the 2016 Georgetown Farmers Market.

This is the second year the chamber has partnered with the locally owned and operated brewery for the farmers market, relocating after several successful years at the community park on N. Bedford Street.

The partnership allows not only greater exposure for the market, but also for 16 Mile, which offers tours and tastings to the general public on a regular basis, and welcomes guests when the farmers market is open Wednesdays through Aug. 31.

Vendors at the 2016 market include LJ's Fresh Lamb, Love Byrd Soap, The Garlic Man, Maebrook Produce, Holly Berry Farms, Little Wagon Produce, Stag Run Farm, T.S. Smith & Sons, DTCC Applied Agriculture, Nothing Better Donuts, Sandy Hill Greenhouses, Evans Produce, The Frozen Farmer, Tout de Suite and the SoDel Concepts food truck Big Thunder.

"We have a great selection of local vendors this year, and we invite everyone to visit what we think is one of the best farmers markets in Sussex County," says Angela Emerson, 2016 chamber president. "We're happy to partner again this year with chamber member 16 Mile, a company that shares our vision of supporting locally owned businesses. So come out and take a look at what the farmers market is all about in 2016. We think you'll be very glad you did."

Officials are adding live music to the market Wednesday, June 29. The eclectic sounds of Ken Cicerale and John Abella will be featured that afternoon. They are also looking at other ways to improve the market and assure vendors and guests the best possible farmers market experience.

"We're exploring many options moving forward and are excited to evolve our local farmers market to being one of the best in the state," says Emerson. "But we're also open to suggestions on how to make it better and would love to hear from the public. So come out on Wednesdays and let us know what we're doing right and how you think we can improve. After all, a farmers market is all about the community."

Over the last two decades or so, farmers markets have begun springing up in small towns and communities all throughout the United States. They all have three main goals, as does the one in Georgetown.

For farmers to earn fair prices for the fruits of their labor by selling directly to consumers
For consumers to gain access to fresh, nutritious, local produce
For communities to regain a figurative "town square," experiencing the many positive outcomes of foot traffic and animated public space.
