Local Boardwalk Buddy Walk advocates get The Lucky Few Tattoo

Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day awareness
March 28, 2018

World Down Syndrome Day, March 21, is a day observed globally with activities and events to raise awareness. Michelle Hetherington, executive director of Boardwalk Buddy Walk, contacted board member Dennis Diehl with the idea of getting The Lucky Few Tattoo. Diehl immediately said, “I’m in.”

The Lucky Few Tattoo was an idea hatched by Mica May, a mom of a Down syndrome child. She posted it on social media, and it quickly went viral and became a movement in the Down syndrome community. When asked about the design, she said in an Instagram post, "Three, for that third extra magic 21st chromosome Jackson has, and the arrows are the perfect symbol because you can't move forward without first being pulled back and stretched.”

To celebrate the day, Hetherington and Diehl headed over to Electric Tiger Tattoo in Rehoboth where tattoo artist Ian Gillin obliged their vision. “It was quick, and I was surprised that it didn’t hurt!” she said.
