Lord Baltimore Lions support adult literacy at Frankford library

April 19, 2018

Lord Baltimore Lions President Janet Bauer and Lions Jack Bauer and John Monahan made a recent visit to Frankford Public Library to meet with Director Rachel Wackett and Joan Loewenstein, literacy coordinator. For a second year in a row, the Lions Club donated funds toward the purchase of instructional resources to assist adult students in developing needed skills.

Wackett said, "This donation will be used toward the purchase of reading texts called English in Action that support English language learning. Last year, the LBLC donation went toward the purchase of books and CDs to facilitate better comprehension and retention for our adult learners."

The Adult Literacy Program at Frankford Public Library offers tutoring in basic reading and writing, math and financial literacy, as well as English language learning and civics education.

Loewenstein said, "The Adult Literacy Program now has grown to serve 24 adult students. There are presently 20 tutors in the program, but more are needed to accommodate the increase in adult students."

The Lord Baltimore Lions learned about this program two years ago, after assisting a woman in need of an eye examination and eyeglasses. It turned out that the woman was an ALP student at the Frankford library.

For more information on the program, call Joan Loewenstein at the Frankford Public Library, 302-732-9351.
