Margaret H. Long, created Clayton PTA

February 13, 2017

Margaret Haldeman Long, 90, of Frankford, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, at Harrison House Senior Living in Georgetown. She was born May 28, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pa., to John and Alice Haldeman, and lived in Haddon Heights, N.J., with her parents, one brother and three sisters.

Mrs. Long is survived by her children Sandra Baker and husband David of Seaford, William H. Long and wife Cynthia of Topsail Island, N.C. and Fredericksburg, Va., and Betsy Pickett and husband Michael of Woodbridge, Va.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Her husband, William S. Long Jr., preceded her in death in 1986.

Margaret was a longtime resident of Frankford where she lived with her husband and three children following her husband's graduation from the University of Delaware in 1952. Margaret was a member of the Frankford New Century Club where, during her presidency, her efforts led to the creation of the first PTA at John M. Clayton School. She was also a Sunday school teacher at the Frankford Presbyterian Church, and a Title I Reading Paraprofessional at Frankford Elementary School for over 20 years.

Before her marriage she worked in Philadelphia for the Sun Oil Company and was known for her love of dancing to the big bands. She had extensive collections of records and autographs of the recording stars of the time. She enjoyed helping her husband remodel the family home, reading to her grandchildren, and traveling to picturesque places on the Eastern Shore with family members who were new to the area.

Margaret will be laid to rest in a private ceremony next to her husband in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Ocean View.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Frankford Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 548, Frankford, DE 19945.
