Mariner’s Bethel trail run draws nearly 200

Runners bow heads in Sunday prayer prior to race
October 28, 2017

Hundreds of runners and walkers bowed their heads in prayer prior to the 16th running of the Mariner’s Bethel Trail Run - 7-Miler or 5K - held Oct. 22 at Camp Barnes inside Assawoman Bay State Wildlife Area.

There was a delivered message, “The first shall be last and the last shall be first,” but fast runners set their watches, “I know he ain’t talking to me.”

Daren Criswell, 38, was first back in the 5K race in 19:35. He was chased to the line by Tyler Blades in 20:29, Bennett Brumbley in 20:57, Sam Michels in 21:31, Alex Arnold in 22:03, Nate McCabe in 22:05 and Leslie Wright in 22:57.

Devin Hundley, 12, a student at Selbyville Middle School was the first woman in 23:38. She followed closely by 9-year-old Lily Noonan in 23:52. Completing the Top 5 for women were Lauren Meehan in 24:19, Allie Munro in 24:49 and Kinley Woodard in 24:53.

The first five female runners were all too young to hold a driver’s license.

Jeff Young, 26, from Bryn Mawr, Pa., was the top finisher in the 7-miler in 40:34. He was followed by Francisco Puac in 41:29 and Martin Rodriguez in 41:37.

“It was another personal best for me,” Rodriguez said. “Now I have to go run it again to complete my marathon training for the day.”

The top 7-miler women were Susan Dunn in 51:19, Katelyn Jensen in 53:59 and Faith Foxwell in 55:47.

There were plenty of personal records in the 7-miler because it’s a race distance that is seldom, if ever, run.

The Sea Witch Fall 5K Classic took place Sunday, Oct. 29, at Grove Park in Rehoboth Beach with hundreds of costumed runners.
