Martha Jane Henry, adored her grandchildren

October 22, 2017

Martha Jane Welsh Henry, 74, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, surrounded by family.

Martha was born and raised in Gorham, N.H., surrounded by the mountains that she loved. She often told stories of her summers spent at her family's camp in Maine, full of laughter, love and song. As a teenager, she met Len, the love of her life and her best friend. From their first kiss on a snowy hill after the final toboggan run of the evening, they were hardly ever away from one another, and this year they celebrated 55 years of marriage. After Len started his career with DuPont, the two of them eventually settled in Newark, where they raised a family among many friends in Robscott Manor. Martha eventually started work as a paraprofessional with the Christina School District, forging lifelong bonds with her coworkers and helping children with special needs. Upon Len's retirement, he and Martha settled in Lewes, where she especially enjoyed watching the birds and deer in the woods behind their house. Perhaps her greatest role was that of grandmother, and she adored her four grandchildren as much as they adored her.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Stewart (Stewie) and Dorothy (Dot) Welsh; and by her beloved sister, Jean. She is survived by her brother, David Welsh; her husband Len and their dog Maisie; her sons Dan (Shabool) and Bryan (Kim); and her grandchildren Zaynah, Noah, Mollie and Max; and by her niece and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27, at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington. Interment will be private.
