Martin Adam Basara, proud Army veteran

March 7, 2018

Martin Adam Basara, 69, of Dagsboro, formerly of Wilmington, passed away in the care of Christiana Hospital in Newark, Sunday, March 4, 2018. He was born in Wilmington May 30,1948, to the late Martin T. and Helen (Szczesiak) Basara, and lived many years in Wilmington.

He was an Army veteran and Vietnam War veteran, and was a skilled technician in radiological, chemical and biological warfare, as well as an expert sharpshooter. He married Deborah Zelanzy in 1974, and owned his own carpet installation business, also subcontracting to other companies. He and Deborah raised a daughter, Jamie Lynn Basara, who gave him three grandchildren. He loved his grandkids, and loved to go fishing, hunting and crabbing. He was a member of American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro, and was also an avid supporter of Post 28 in Oak Orchard. He was a "git-r-done!" kind of man.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah; his daughter Jamie; and a brother, Robert Basara and his wife Carole Ann of Wilmington. He is survived by his grandchildren: Dallas, Jace and Brooklyn Freezer; and two special "adopted" grandchildren: Sammie and Dalton Freezer. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Helen Zelazny, who resided with them, in addition to many other beloved family members. He also leaves behind his beloved black lab Ozzie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by a brother: James Basara.

The family wishes to extend to the 2nd Critical Care Team of Christiana Hospital a big thank you!

A time of viewing and visitation will be held at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro, Friday, March 9, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Following this, Committal rites and Conferring of Military Honors will occur in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1 p.m. The Rev.
