Maryland pedestrian dies in crash south of Dewey Beach

May 25, 2018

A Maryland man, whom Delaware State Police have identified as Peter M. Rudnicki, 22, of Bethesda, has died following a crash south of Dewey Beach.

At about 12:31 a.m. May 25, Rudnicki was walking south on the northbound side of Route 1 at the intersection of Keybox Road and Coastal Highway. A 2012 Hyundai Accent, operated by a 56-year-old Lewes man, was traveling north on Coastal Highway in the right lane approaching Keybox Road.

For unknown reasons, the pedestrian walked into the northbound lane of Coastal Highway directly into the car's path, police said. The driver of the Hyundai Accent was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck him with the right front bumper, according to police. After the collision, the pedestrian came to rest on the northbound shoulder. The vehicle continued northbound for a short distance and came to a controlled stop on the northbound shoulder of Coastal Highway.

The roadway was dark and the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk or carrying a light at the time of the collision, police said.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by responding EMS. Alcohol and unsafe speed are not factors on behalf of the driver, who was properly restrained and not injured, police said.

The northbound lanes of Coastal Highway were closed between Dewey Beach and the inlet bridge for about four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
