May 1 deadline for DSGA college scholarship applications

Time is running out for high school or college students thinking of applying for a four-year scholarship from the Delaware State Golf Association.

This year’s deadline is Tuesday, May 1, and the application is available online at dsga.org/application.

The DSGA Scholarship Fund helps Delaware students who demonstrate high-level academic achievement, community service and a connection to golf. Many Cape Region students have received these stipends, along with others from throughout the state.

Cape golf extends winning streak

When the Cape Henlopen golf team returned from spring break, they picked up where they left off, with three wins in three days.

The squad traveled to the Rookery North course April 9, defeating host Lake Forest 174-287 on the front nine. Nolan Brown won medalist honors with a 41, followed by Dane Palmer’s 43.

Reed Jones made his first scoring contribution to the Vikings’ season with his 44. Saxon Kalb completed the team total with his 46.

Kalb said, “I hadn’t played for a week and a half, so I was fine with that.”

On April 10, the team hosted Sussex Central on the full front nine at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Brown led all players with his 1-over par 37, with Palmer finishing a stroke back.

“My short game was on fire,” Brown said. Palmer said, “Every part of my game went well.” 

Jones helped again with his 41, with Ben Skelley completing the team scoring with his 48. This was the first time this season that Skelley’s score counted.

The Vikings then hosted Delmar April 11, defeating the Wildcats 190-206. Palmer won medalist honors with a 42.

“The winds were the complete opposite of Tuesday’s,” he said. “They were coming from the south on Wednesday and made the last holes a lot harder.”

Skelley’s 47 was second best for Cape. “On Wednesday, the wind was definitely an advantage downwind. I was able to make par on four and one. I also parred nine, and was on in three.”

Kalb was frustrated with his 49. “It was my putting. I was on in two on the sixth hole, and four-putted for a double,” he said.

Brown’s 52 was fourth best for Cape that day, and his worst score in a long while. For example, he dumped two balls in the water on the par 3 fifth hole. “I just blew up,” he said.

Assistant golf coach Samantha Purple recognized the challenges the team faced during the three straight days of competition. “For the Sussex Central match, the boys played really well. Nolan really ground it out for his round. For the Delmar match, the difference was almost night and day. This season, our No. 3 and 4 players have really helped by making good scores.”

On April 17, the Vikings traveled to Bear Trap Dunes for a match against Sussex Academy, whose roster includes junior golf standout Hannah Lydic. Palmer earned medalist honors as Cape won 168-181.

Vikings head coach Chris Krueger noted, “Dane continues to build up his skills, missing only one fairway.”

Brown recovered from two bogeys at the start of his round with an eagle putt from 10 feet on the par 5 third hole. He finished with a 39, one stroke back from Palmer.

Jones shot a respectable 45, and Kalb completed the team scoring with his 46.

Cape was set to compete at Hooper’s Landing Thursday, April 19, against Seaford, and again Tuesday, April 24, against Laurel.

Local club competition results

The Mulligan’s Pointe Ladies Golf League started their 2018 season with an opening breakfast April 7 and a weekly game April 10 based on net pars or better.

Sandy Harrison took first place, with Debbie Quinn in second and Teresa Kinhardt in third. Linda Townsend won the closest-to-the-pin contest.

The league played a Nassau tournament April 17. Harrison again won first place, with Susan Shockley in second and Joann Foster in third.
