With 500 U.S. flags serving as a backdrop, the Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club had a dedication ceremony May 25 for its Flags For Heroes project in front of Cape Henlopen High School along Kings Highway.
Veterans and active military, military killed in action, Purple Heart recipients, Delaware State Police troopers and Lewes Police, and Lewes and Rehoboth Beach fire department members were honored during the ceremony. A flag was placed in memory and honor of each group. State Sen. Ernie Lopez provided the keynote address and Rotary member Nitan Soni offered opening remarks. Two Cape Henlopen students – H.O. Brittingham student William Ducote and Mariner Middle School student Reagan Ciabattoni – read their prize-winning poems.
Each of the flags has a medallion attached to it listing the name of the donor and their personal hero. The club uses proceeds from the project to support local charities.
