Milford Memorial Day celebration set for May 28 at senior center

May 16, 2018

The 22nd Annual Milford Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 28, at the Milford Senior Center. The ceremony includes a welcoming speech from Milford Mayor Archie Campbell and the Milford Community Band playing patriotic music.

This year's keynote speaker is retired Lt. Gen. Henry McCann. He served in Germany during the Cold War period, held many command positions in the Delaware National Guard, and finished his career as the J6 director of the National Guard Bureau Joint Staff responsible for command, control, communications and computers in all 54 states and territories. A representative from each of the five military services, the Merchant Marine, and the Gold Star Mothers will place memorial flowers on the remembrance wreath.

Rep. Harvey Kenton, R-Milford; Rep. Charles Postles, R-Milford; Rep. Dave Wilson, R-Bridgeville; and Sen. Gary Simpson, R-Milford, will share their comments on what Memorial Day means to them. Charles Garrod, a Korean War veteran, is serving for the third year as the ceremony chairman. He has also served as the  Korean War Veterans Association Delaware Department commander. Two Boy Scout troops and one Cub Scout pack will participate in the program: Troop 186 from Avenue United Methodist Church, Troop 116 from St. John the Apostle Church and Pack 186 from Avenue UMC.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Council 6438 will provide a 21-gun salute, and there will be a few uniquely Milford touches in this Memorial Day ceremony. All are welcome.
