Milton chamber to delay hiring director

Volunteers pledge events will continue
September 25, 2017

The Milton Chamber of Commerce is once again without an executive director.

This time around, the chamber board of directors has put hiring a replacement on hold.

“We're evaluating the situation, and we're not in a position right now to go through the hiring process,” said President Michael Clark. He said the process may begin in early 2018.

In April 2017, the chamber hired Kara Kattau of Lewes as part-time director. Kattau replaced former Executive Director Lisa Sumstine, who announced she would be stepping down in August 2016.

Kattau, who left the position several months after she was hired, declined comment.

Board member Frank Payton said Milton is not the only Sussex County chamber without a director. Chambers in Georgetown and Millsboro also are looking for new leadership.

“We're here to support the local business community,” Clark said.

“And how can we do that better?” Payton chimed in. “That's the question we're going to try to answer.”

The chamber is known for community events such as Bargains on the Broadkill, Truckin' Tuesday and the Holly Festival, and has more than 100 local business members.

Payton said events will continue without a director, with the chamber now relying on the volunteer-only board and other helping hands to get the job done.

“We are a working board. We have full-time jobs,” Payton said. “But we are committed to meeting the needs of the community through our volunteer efforts.”

The Holly Festival will return to downtown Milton from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9. For more information, go to www.historicmilton.com.
