Milton mural wins national award

December 7, 2017

A large mural on the side of Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant in Milton has earned national recognition.

The mural designed by Lynn Rogers of Rogers Sign began in 2016 as a grassroots effort among local business owners, artists and community members. Rogers recently submitted the work for consideration in the 2017 United States Sign Council Design Competition, for which it won in the category of banners, murals or supergraphics. The award-winning mural will be displayed at Sign World International and recognized during an annual event in Atlantic City, N.J., in December.

The 30-by-18-foot display illustrates Milton’s history as a shipbuilding town and the home of five governors, established in 1807.

In the center of the mural is the Thomas Winsmore schooner, a ship built a short distance downstream from Irish Eyes in 1891, at the former location of Wilson's Marina on Front Street, said local historian Russ McCabe.

Support for the mural was provided by community members, businesses and organizations, including the Town of Milton, the Milton Community Foundation, Rogers Signs and Irish Eyes.
