Two Milton residents were recognized by town officials June 5 for their contributions to the community.

John Potocki, owner of Salon Milton on Chestnut Street, was recognized with the 2017 Citizen of the Year Award for his community service.

Potocki, who moved to Milton in 2005, is a longtime member of the Milton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Community Foundation, Milton Historical Society and Milton Garden Club. In 2007, he started Salon Milton's Fund Razor, which has raised thousands of dollars for community initiatives, including the Milton Historical Society and the Gladys Wilkins Seeding the Future Scholarship Fund.

“John is proud to call Milton his home and works tirelessly to make Milton a better place to live and work,” said Milton Mayor Ted Kanakos.

Miltonian Denny Hughes was presented with the town's 2017 Lifetime Volunteer Award for his work with a variety of Milton organizations.

Hughes served on Milton Town Council for 17 years, and he also served on the town's water committee, planning and zoning commission, board of adjustment, finance committee and currently is chairman of the historic preservation commission. Along with Jack Hudson and George Carey, Hughes worked to secure the town's Milton Clipper Train in Milton Memorial Park.

He has also been a member since 1968 of the Milton Fire Department, where he now serves as treasurer. In that time, Hughes served as the department's vice president, secretary, fire recorder, chief, assistant chief and safety officer, and he has been on the board since 1970.

Hughes also works with the Milton Historical Society, where he has been a board member since 1999 and played an integral role in remodeling the society's current home on Union Street. He also is a member of the Milton Jaycees, the masonic lodge and the Friends of the Milton Public Library, where he helped raise $400,000 for the new library.

This is the first time in recent years that Milton has recognized a citizen and volunteer of the year, a program initiated earlier this year by Councilman Charlie Fleetwood.
