Minds Over Matter partners with The Jefferson School

October 25, 2016

Minds Over Matter Initiative, a Lewes-based organization dedicated to empowering individuals through mindfulness education, conducted a teacher inservice training for faculty and staff of The Jefferson School in August and began teaching students at the private Georgetown school in October.

Through a variety of mindfulness lessons, kindergarteners through eighth graders at The Jefferson School will be introduced to concepts which promote an appreciation for the present moment. From mindful listening to mindful test taking, the benefits of Minds Over Matter Initiative’s evidenced-based approach include improved concentration and focus, decreased tension and stress, enhanced conflict-resolution skills and increased self-awareness.

“Bringing mindfulness into The Jefferson School seemed like a natural fit,” says Connie Hendricks, head of school. “We already work with the students on taking stock of what they are doing and how they, and others, are feeling. Mindfulness will increase this awareness as well as teach both students and faculty ways to help reduce anxiety and increase the ability to focus. Being able to learn these skills trough a non-judgmental process is very valuable for everyone.”

Minds Over Matter Initiative is dedicated to providing individuals with a tool to help achieve and maintain focus, inner calm and resilience. The practice of mindfulness is free, easily accessible and promotes an appreciation for and grounding in the present moment.
