The Movies at Midway is working on a new high-tech theater that promises customers an immersive experience.

The Cube, a 6,300-square-foot, 200-seat theater, will feature a floor-to-ceiling screen and 15-channel Dolby Atmos sound system. Theater co-owner Tiffany Derrickson said, “We're doing it to stay current with the latest, greatest technologies and to be able to offer that to our patrons to provide the best movie-going experience we can.”

The premium, large-format theater will be comparable to an IMAX theater, she said. Plush leather, stadium-style seating is an added bonus, Derrickson said.

“We feel like it's the movie experience people want,” she said. “It's super exciting.”

The Cube's screen will be 58 feet wide and 24 feet tall, and Derrickson said she's hoping it will be open before Thanksgiving 2017. Movies at Midway's existing theaters remain open during construction.

Derrickson said this is the largest expansion the theater has undergone since a complete renovation in the early '90s. The 12-theater venue, founded by Derrickson's grandfather Bill Derrickson in the late 1950s as a two-screen theater with a drive-in, can now accommodate more than 1,500 movie lovers in total.
