NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet set Sept. 17

The Lower Sussex NAACP will hold its 18th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet at 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, at Grace United Methodist Church Hall in Georgetown. The public is invited to attend. This year's theme is Pursuing Liberty In the Face of Injustice; Fighting for America's Promise – Our Lives Matter....Our Votes Matter.

The Lower Sussex NAACP always honors individuals in the community who are continuously giving of themselves for the benefit of others. This year's honorees are Jacques Bowe, Daeveon Deshields, Charlotte King and Denice Peacock. This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Jeremy J. Collins, Advocacy and Policy counsel at Southern Coalition for Social Justice in Durham, N.C. He received his law degree from the University Of North Carolina School of Law.

Collins has been an advocate for social justice throughout his career. Some of his accomplishments are working with Murder Victims' Families for Reconciliation, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc. and People of Faith Against the Death Penalty. He served for three years as president for the Young Democrats and has worked tirelessly in Delaware for the repeal of the death penalty.
