New civil engineering transfer degree program links Del Tech students to University of Delaware

September 23, 2016

The newly created civil engineering technology transfer option allows Delaware Technical Community College students to take two years of civil engineering at Delaware Tech and transfer as a true junior to a four-year institution.

Delaware Tech's associate degree program will prepare students for transfer to a baccalaureate civil engineering program that leads to a career as a civil engineer. Rigorous mathematics, chemistry, physics, statistics, materials and civil engineering courses prepare students for their final two years of study at a four-year institution.

The program currently has an articulation agreement with the University of Delaware. Delaware Tech is looking into other four-year universities to create similar agreements.

Diane Calloway, department chair for civil engineering at Delaware Tech's Owens Campus, is excited about the potential this program offers students. Calloway made a similar transition, graduating from Delaware Tech in 2004 and transferring to the University of Delaware for her bachelor's degree, but did not have an articulation agreement like this one.

"This is such a tremendous opportunity for our students," Calloway said. "It will take any headaches out of the transition, and they will know what their path is to finish their bachelor's degree before they start it."

Once students graduate with a bachelor's degree they will be prepared to work as a construction engineer, structural engineer, geotechnical engineer, transportation engineer and many more. This program is offered at both the Owens Campus in Georgetown and the Stanton Campus in Newark. For more information, go to www. dtcc.edu/academics/programs-study.
