New clubhouse build set to begin in Eastern Sussex

May 22, 2017

The southern Delaware-based Whayland Company will soon break ground on its fourth coastal clubhouse project in a little more than a year, this one a 4,650-square-foot facility near the community of Long Neck in eastern Sussex County.

To feature a tiki bar, an outdoor lounge, pickleball courts, a playground, an outdoor grilling pavilion and a swimming pool, among other amenities, the clubhouse will be located in the new Pelican Point community, just off Indian Mission Road. Work is scheduled to begin soon with an opening tentatively planned for the spring of 2018.

"Every clubhouse we build is unique in its own way, but the amenities at this Pelican Point clubhouse are really going to be special," says John Russ, the Whayland project manager who will be overseeing the construction of Sussex County's latest residential clubhouse. "I'm really excited about this project, especially the stone veneer that we're going to be putting on it."

The clubhouse at Pelican Point will be the fourth such project by Whayland in a little more than a year, after similar builds at the Peninsula on the Indian River Bay, the Reserves and at the Coastal Club community in Lewes.

With a local history dating back nearly seven decades, the Whayland Co., has a reputation on Delmarva for large commercial projects. More recently, however, the company has established a niche for clubhouse builds at some of southern Delaware's largest and most sought after residential communities.

"I think we're beginning to get this particular niche in the marketplace because we incorporate things into our project plans that you don't typically see on commercial jobs," says Russ. "We include a lot of residential features, but we do so on a commercial scale. It's kind of like we're building five or six custom houses, all under one roof."

Whayland will be serving as the general contractor on the Pelican Point project and will be overseeing a team of more than 20 subcontractors throughout the course of the approximately six month construction schedule.

Other members of the Whayland team, including Senior Superintendent John Wilson and Senior Estimator Dwain Moyer, will also be an integral part of the project.
